Indonesian consumer optimism strengthened in August 2026, reflected by the Consumer Confidence Index (IKK) rising to 118.5. Amid this positive sentiment, the government remains optimistic that economic growth can approach 6% in Q4-2026 by maintaining liquidity and stimulating private sector activity. Furthermore, to support digital payment ecosystems and direct social assistance, the government is preparing an automatic bank account initiative for citizens turning 17..
Bank Indonesia reported a 1.7-point increase in the Consumer Confidence Index (IKK) to 118.5 in August 2026, up from 116.8 in July 2026. This positive shift breaks a three-month downward trend, and an index above 100 signifies sustained consumer optimism regarding economic conditions. This growth is accompanied by parallel increases in the Consumer Expectation Index (IEK) to 127.6 and the Current Economic Condition Index (IKE) to 109.4.
From a financial perspective, the proportion of consumer income allocated to consumption increased from 72.7% to 74.2%, while allocations for savings and debt repayments declined. Spatially, the highest IKK increases were recorded in Mataram, Bandung, and Medan, whereas Padang, Surabaya, and Banten experienced the most significant declines.
Aligning with rising consumer confidence, the Minister of Finance expressed optimism that Indonesia's economic growth is steadily approaching the 6% target for Q4-2026. After recording 5.61% in Q1-2026, growth temporarily slowed to 5.29% in Q2-2026 due to global disruptions. To navigate these macroeconomic challenges, the Minister emphasized a "self-fulfilling prophecy" concept to foster positive public and investor expectations, thereby encouraging consumption, capital injection, and corporate expansion.
To sustain recovery momentum, the government is actively maintaining banking system liquidity and participating in the bond market. These strategic interventions aim to bolster private sector activity, which is now accelerating to support the effectiveness of government spending programs.
To further stimulate economic activity and digital transactions, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs announced a groundbreaking automatic bank account program for youth. Every citizen reaching the age of 17 will automatically receive a bank account upon the issuance of their National Identity Card (KTP). Supported by PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. and PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk., the government will inject an initial balance of IDR 50,000 into each new account.
Bank Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) will issue specialized regulations to ensure this initial balance is not depleted by standard monthly administrative fees. This initiative is strategically designed to expand the digital payment ecosystem, particularly QRIS adoption. It also establishes a highly efficient, leak-proof framework for the Ministry of Finance to disburse targeted social assistance directly to beneficiaries' personal accounts.
